Liberty Mutual Corporate Headquarters
Standing in the Back Bay area of Boston at 157 Berkeley Street is the newly constructed Liberty Mutual tower. The 22 story building began construction in 2011 and was completed in 2013, costing a total of $300 million. The structure and foundation is comprised of up-down construction. While it is a tall structure, with a height of 290 feet, it has 4 levels below grade space that were founded on load bearing elements. These were 3' x 10' reinforced concrete elements constructed using the slurry wall method and internal slurry panels. Consequently, height was a concern for this limestone-clad structure, due to the fact that it sits on thick marine clay, and had to be limited. Furthermore, problems were encountered during the excavation process as old wooden piles and caissons caused hinderances. The subsurface of the area beneath this building is composed of 20 feet of fill, 20 feet of organic silt and 75 feet of typical marine clay with depths of 40-115 feet, below which the bedrock is found.
